A courageous grandfather, identified as Phil Crow, tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue his nine-year-old granddaughter, Sia Briskham, at Tregirls Beach near Padstow, Cornwall on a recent Bank Holiday. Mr. Crow, aged 68, encountered difficulties in the water after his granddaughter faced trouble due to a sudden tidal change.
Reports indicate that Mr. Crow suffered a cardiac arrest while in the sea. Fortunately, his wife, Tina, also aged 68, and their granddaughter were rescued by a passing boat and brought to safety. Despite efforts by medics, Mr. Crow, a retired stonemason, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passing adds to the somber toll of seven teenagers who recently drowned amidst record-breaking high temperatures across the UK.
Surviving Mr. Crow are his wife of over 50 years, along with 11 siblings and five grandchildren. Mrs. Crow commended her husband’s bravery, recalling how he selflessly pushed their granddaughter to safety while struggling in the water himself. Tragically, Mr. Crow was one of eight individuals who perished in water-related incidents over the weekend.
Professor Karen Luyt, an expert from the National Child Mortality Database, emphasized the need for enhanced education to prevent such tragedies, especially among children. She highlighted the concerning statistics of child drownings, stressing the importance of water safety programs and accessible swimming lessons to mitigate risks, particularly for children from deprived areas.
