“Health Experts Warn of STI Surge in European Holiday Hotspots”

Date:

Health experts are raising concerns about the spread of two diseases in Spain and other parts of Europe, advising UK holidaymakers to take precautions during their summer travels. Recent data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reveals a significant uptick in gonorrhoea cases across Europe, reaching 106,331 in 2024, marking a 303% increase since 2015.

Moreover, syphilis cases have more than doubled, totaling 45,577 cases. Spain reported some of the highest infection figures in Europe, with 37,169 cases of gonorrhoea and 11,556 cases of syphilis in 2024.

Gemma Nice, a sex and relationships coach at condoms.uk, emphasized the potential risks associated with holiday behavior changes, such as increased alcohol consumption, spontaneity, and a relaxed mindset. She highlighted the importance of using condoms for both pregnancy prevention and protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Experts caution that symptomless STIs are more common than people realize, leading to unknowing transmission among partners. Many individuals mistakenly believe they would immediately detect an STI, but infections can remain asymptomatic for extended periods while still being contagious.

The ECDC warns of rising infection rates in Europe due to gaps in testing and prevention efforts, advising individuals to use condoms with new or multiple partners and seek testing if symptoms manifest.

According to condoms.uk experts, certain holiday behaviors, especially when combined with alcohol and lowered inhibitions, can heighten the risk of STI transmission. It is crucial to avoid common mistakes like neglecting to pack protection, ensuring proper storage of condoms, and engaging in open discussions about sexual health.

Gemma stressed the importance of safe sex practices during holiday encounters, emphasizing the necessity of planning ahead and carrying protection to safeguard both oneself and partners.
