A young boy, aged nine, who had been waiting for a heart transplant for eight years, has finally received the life-saving surgery. Dáithí Mac Gabhann was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) at birth in 2016, a rare condition that affects the development of the left side of the heart. His journey included his first major surgery at only four days old.
After a long wait, changes to organ donation laws in Northern Ireland were inspired by Dáithí’s courageous campaign. His family joyfully announced that he had undergone a successful heart transplant at the NHS Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, expressing immense gratitude.
As Dáithí left the hospital ward, nurses applauded him, and the iconic song “Eye of the Tiger” played in the background. His family shared the emotional moment on social media, celebrating the “gift of life” and his resilience.
Following the surgery, Dáithí will remain in Newcastle for three more weeks before returning to Northern Ireland. His medical history includes being placed on a bypass machine for six days after his initial surgery at four days old. Subsequent health concerns led to the decision for a heart transplant due to complications with his heart valves.
Dáithí’s journey prompted the establishment of the Donate4Dáithí campaign, aiming to raise awareness of organ donation and advocating for a change in the organ donation process in Northern Ireland. The campaign raised over €12,800 (£11,00) through a GoFundMe initiative.
The implementation of “Dáithí’s Law” on June 1, 2023, marked a significant milestone as Northern Ireland became the last nation in the United Kingdom to transition to an opt-out system for organ donation.
