A pregnant woman sought refuge in a Birmingham restaurant after being attacked, causing a chaotic scene where diners were threatened with violence. The incident unfolded at Al-Qamar restaurant in Balsall Heath when the distressed woman rushed in for safety, startling patrons like Akilah Bennett and her family who were preparing to leave.
Shortly after the woman’s arrival, a man brandishing a baseball bat appeared outside, initially leading observers to believe there was a connection between him and the woman. However, it became clear that the situation was more ominous than initially thought.
According to Ms. Bennett, the man started menacingly swinging the bat, prompting her uncle to bravely shield the woman from harm. The restaurant owner recognized the aggressor as a local resident. The pregnant woman recounted being attacked by the man while walking home, sustaining an elbow injury from the bat strike.
As tension escalated, the man was repelled by Ms. Bennett’s uncle, the restaurant owner, and others, only to return wielding a knife. Fearing for everyone’s safety, Ms. Bennett and her cousin swiftly secured the premises, with the police and ambulance arriving shortly after the ordeal began.
Despite the unsettling incident, Ms. Bennett praised the restaurant staff for their handling of the situation, lamenting the necessity of taking refuge during what was supposed to be an enjoyable meal. West Midlands Police confirmed the event occurred on July 14, just before 10 pm on Vincent Street, leading to a woman’s serious arm injury and threats with a knife towards intervening bystanders.
Authorities are actively investigating the case, urging anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward and assist in the inquiry by referencing log 6300 of July 14.
