Southport observed a moment of silence marking two years since a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of three young lives. The community gathered in the town hall gardens to honor the memory of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, who tragically lost their lives during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29, 2024.
During the three-minute silence, individuals paid tribute to the victims and survivors, including eight other children, dance teacher Leanne Lucas, and businessman John Hayes who were also injured in the attack. Participants, including members of the public, Sefton Council, and Merseyside Police, solemnly reflected on the impact of the tragedy, some visibly moved to tears.
Merseyside Police, in a statement shared on social media, expressed heartfelt remembrance for the light and joy brought by Alice, Bebe, and Elsie, emphasizing the lasting impact of the event on the lives of those affected. The community was encouraged to refrain from leaving floral tributes and instead support local causes through donations.
Following the incident, foundations were established in memory of the young victims. Alice’s WonderDance Foundation aims to honor Alice’s spirit by assisting young dancers, while Elsie’s Story seeks to carry on her legacy by supporting youth. Bebe’s Hive was also established to offer creative sessions for grieving children.
In an open letter to the community, Sefton Council provided spaces for residents to reflect, pray, and seek solace on the anniversary. The council recognized the diverse ways individuals may choose to grieve and urged people to honor the day in their own way, whether through quiet reflection, spending time with loved ones, or attending designated areas for contemplation.
A recent public inquiry found that the tragic attack could have been prevented with appropriate interventions from agencies and the assailant’s parents. The community continues to remember the lives lost and support those affected by the devastating event.
