Teenage Girl Honored for Heroic River Rescue

A brave teenage girl has been honored for her heroic act of saving a boy from drowning. Shelby Quigley, aged 14, demonstrated exceptional courage by jumping into the River Wyre to rescue 15-year-old Lotus Bowker who was struggling in the water. Despite the strong currents, Shelby managed to bring the boy to the surface and kept him afloat until assistance arrived.

Shelby’s selfless actions during a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition earned her the prestigious Royal Humane Society Silver Medal, a rare recognition for individuals who display remarkable bravery in life-saving efforts. Andrew Chapman, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, commended Shelby for her extraordinary bravery, stating that she gave the boy the best possible chance of survival.

The tragic incident unfolded when Lotus, who had a Developmental Learning Disorder, entered the river against warnings from his parents due to his limited swimming abilities. Despite efforts to save him, Lotus tragically passed away the following day at the hospital.

An inquest revealed that Shelby cautiously approached Lotus in the water, attempting to keep him afloat before Neil Quinn intervened to bring him to safety. Off-duty anaesthetist Steve Wiggans provided critical medical assistance, aiding in the emergency response to save Lotus’s life. Despite their efforts, Lotus succumbed to the incident, with drowning cited as the cause of death.

Shelby’s quick thinking and bravery in the face of danger have rightfully earned her praise and recognition as a true heroine. The community and authorities have acknowledged her exceptional act of courage, highlighting her unwavering determination to save a life despite the risks involved.
