“Grieving Parents Advocate Water Safety Education”

Date:

A couple who tragically lost their 16-year-old son in a reservoir five years ago are advocating for parents to educate their children about the risks of open water. Simon and Gaynor Haycock have dedicated their efforts to raising awareness among young people about water safety.

Encouraging parents to ensure their children are informed, the couple emphasized the importance of teaching kids about the hazards of open water. Their son, Sam Haycock, lost his life at Ulley Reservoir, Rotherham, on May 28, 2021, while celebrating the end of term with friends by jumping from a bridge into the water.

Expressing their shock at the unexpected tragedy, Simon, 56, shared his disbelief, stating, “Never in a million years would that have entered my head, that he’d have done anything like that.” Gaynor, 60, added, “He’s never been in that area before, it’s so out of character, but they all decided to leave school and go out.”

Following Sam’s death, the couple became acutely aware of the prevalence of drowning incidents. Motivated by their grief, they have been actively engaging with schools, colleges, and fire brigades to educate young people and prevent further tragedies.

Simon emphasized the ripple effects of such incidents, highlighting how preventable they are. Reflecting on the loss, he shared, “Sam was one of hundreds of people that drowned that year – that’s a lot of ripples and their lives that it touches. It’s frightening for what is a completely preventable thing.”

Through their organization, Sam’s Army’s Mission 1 Life, the family is working on a new water safety video to reach a wider audience and emphasize the importance of being cautious around open water. Simon expressed his hope that their message resonates with parents and helps young individuals understand the risks associated with water activities.

In closing, Simon stressed the need for education on water safety, regardless of swimming ability, cautioning against underestimating the potential dangers lurking beneath the water’s surface. The family’s dedication to preventing further tragedies underscores their commitment to saving lives and spreading awareness about water safety.
