A family experienced heartbreak after adopting a girl they believed to be 12 years old, only to discover that she was actually a 37-year-old woman involved in a series of similar cases. The couple had formed an emotional bond with the woman, who had convinced them of her young age and health issues related to childhood trauma, leading them to provide expensive medications for her.
The 37-year-old woman, Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, allegedly preyed on victims by fabricating stories of abuse and seeking refuge with families, churches, and social workers. She used aliases, fake abuse narratives, and childlike behaviors to elicit sympathy and support from unsuspecting individuals.
Authorities revealed that Amanda deceived people across different cities in Brazil by posing as a child with medical conditions and behavioral traits consistent with autism. Her elaborate ruse was exposed when needles started emerging from her body, prompting medical examinations that confirmed her true age and the extent of her deception.
Subsequent investigations uncovered Amanda’s history of similar deceptions in various Brazilian states, leading to her conviction for false identity offenses in Goias. Despite the court’s sentence, she has not served time as of yet. Following a custody hearing, Amanda was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation while being detained at Joinville Women’s Prison.
Legal proceedings continue as Amanda’s defense team seeks clarity on the circumstances surrounding the case through the psychiatric assessment. The judge granted the request for preventive detention and evaluation, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
