Fears are rising that the peace agreement between US President Donald Trump and Iran could face obstacles from Israel, as Israel has pledged to maintain its presence in Lebanon indefinitely. Resolving conflicts with Israel’s neighboring country is deemed crucial for Tehran and is a significant aspect of the upcoming deal. There were reports of Israeli air-strikes and artillery attacks on Hezbollah areas in southern Lebanon on Monday, despite the imminent agreement.
Trump recently announced a new peace deal that will involve a 60-day consultation period, set to be finalized by both parties in Switzerland on Friday. Tehran has consistently emphasized the inclusion of Lebanon and Hezbollah in any long-term agreement related to Trump’s policies on Iran. However, Israeli leaders have stated their intention to keep troops stationed in southern Lebanon, indicating a persistent stance against Hezbollah. Iranian authorities have warned that they hold the US accountable for any Israeli actions in Lebanon, claiming direct coordination between Israel and America.
According to a British security source, tensions have escalated between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump. Netanyahu’s push to combat Hezbollah conflicts with Iran’s efforts to extend the agreement to include Hezbollah. The Memorandum of Understanding will initiate a 60-day consultation period, address the Strait of Hormuz, and discuss Iran’s nuclear program. The agreement is also expected to involve significant financial compensations and sanctions relief in exchange for peace. Iran insists that any deal must encompass Lebanon and Hezbollah for it to be acceptable.
Iran’s Foreign Minister has stressed Lebanon’s integral role in the agreement, emphasizing respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have affirmed their decision to retain troops in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza indefinitely. They have also warned of a strong response if Iran targets Israel due to events in Lebanon. Opposition voices within Israel have criticized Netanyahu for accepting an agreement that excludes Israel’s interests, while Trump has condemned Israel’s recent military actions.
