CCTV footage recently captured a tragic incident where a tourist lost her life after being struck by a statue thrown from a balcony while strolling with her partner. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Chiara Jaconis, was enjoying her birthday trip to Naples, Italy, when a 13-year-old boy hurled a 4.4lbs onyx statue from a third-floor balcony, hitting Chiara on the head. The shocking event left Chiara motionless on the ground as her boyfriend reacted in disbelief and called for help.
Emergency responders rushed Chiara to the hospital, where she underwent urgent surgery. Despite medical efforts, Chiara succumbed to severe brain injuries two days later. Chiara, an Italian national working for the fashion brand Prada in Paris, was walking with her boyfriend in Naples’ Spanish Quarters when the tragic incident occurred.
The parents of the teenager who threw the statue are now facing charges of negligent manslaughter. The boy, protected by Italian law due to being under 14, was cleared of criminal responsibility by a juvenile court. However, prosecutors argue that closer supervision by his parents could have prevented the tragedy, as the boy had reportedly engaged in similar risky behaviors in the past.
The parents have vehemently denied any involvement or ownership of the statue, appealing the court’s decision based on their son’s age. The incident has sparked a debate on parental accountability in densely populated areas and has garnered significant public attention in Italy. A preliminary hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 26.
